Why driveway reviews are harder to read than most
A driveway looks its best the week it is poured. Almost every review is written in that window, before the first heavy storm season, before the first summer of full sun, before any settlement would show. That timing gap is the single biggest reason review averages mislead homeowners on concrete work specifically.
The way around it is to read for the details that predict how a driveway will behave later, rather than for how happy someone was on handover day.
What to look for
Recent local reviews
Prioritize reviews from the last year or two in your area. Crews and subcontractors change, and a Miami Gardens or nearby South Florida job tells you more about relevant conditions than one from a different climate.
Photos
Customer photos are worth more than any written claim. Look at joint lines — are they straight and evenly spaced? Is the broom texture consistent in direction and depth? Are the edges clean, or crumbling at the forms? Is the slope visible and heading away from the house?
Comments about drainage
The most valuable sentence in any driveway review is something like “it has been through a full rainy season and water runs straight off.” Reviews that mention puddling, water heading toward the garage, or a low spot that stays wet are telling you the grading was not planned properly.
Finishing quality
Look for mentions of an even surface, no trowel burns or dark patches, consistent color, and joints that were cut rather than cracked into place.
Cleanup
Concrete work is messy. Reviews that mention washout residue left in the yard, concrete splatter on walls and walkways, or debris left behind describe a crew that treats the last hour of a job as optional.
Communication
Scheduling around rain, confirming pour day, explaining the curing window, answering the phone after the check cleared. These comments predict your experience better than almost anything else.
Permit experience

Projects like yours
A glowing review for a small patio repair says little about a 900-square-foot driveway replacement with an apron. Match scope: size, whether demolition was involved, thickness, and whether drainage work was part of it.
Before and after proof
The most useful evidence is a before photo showing the failed driveway, an in-progress photo showing base and reinforcement, and an after photo of the finished surface. Middle photos matter most: that is where you see whether the base was compacted, whether mesh or rebar was supported off the ground, and how the forms were set. Anyone can photograph fresh concrete.
Warning signs
- Bursts of short five-star reviews posted within a few days of each other.
- Reviews with no project detail at all — “great job, highly recommend” and nothing else.
- Repeated mentions of the same problem, especially settlement, puddling or unreturned calls.
- No reviews describing how a problem was resolved — every real contractor has had one.
- Claims of licenses, awards or years in business that nothing else on the company's site supports.
- Pressure to pay a large deposit before any written scope exists.
Questions to ask before accepting a driveway estimate
- What slab thickness and concrete strength are you pouring, and what reinforcement?
- How deep is the base, what material, and how will it be compacted?
- Does the price include removing and hauling away the existing slab?
- Where will water go, and how is the slope to the swale or approved drainage area being set?
- Is the driveway apron included, and is it being built to the approach requirements?
- How will control joints be placed and at what spacing?
- Who confirms permit requirements for my property and handles the application?
- What is the curing guidance, and when can I park on it?
- What is not included in this price?
- Is the full scope in writing before any deposit?
If a contractor answers those clearly, the reviews matter a lot less. If they cannot, no rating should reassure you.
